Marine Corps Recruit Depot History
A few weeks after establishing Camp Howard on North Island in San Diego, Col. Joseph Pendleton, on September 6, 1914, was the guest speaker at the U. S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. The subject of his speech was "San Diego, An Ideal Location for a Permanent Marine Corps Base." The drive behind his lecture was the unsatisfactory conditions and the less than convenient location of his men and staff at Camp Howard. About this same time, Col. Pendleton wrote to the Commandant of the Marine Corps at Washington D. C. about the deplorable conditions at Camp Howard and presented the idea of the possible establishment of a permanent Marine Corps base in San Diego.
The Navy General Board approved the establishment of a base on January 8, 1916 and the Marine Corps' base on the bay tidelands called the Dutch Flats was authorized by a Naval appropriation bill of August 29, 1916, in large part due to the efforts of Congressman William Kettner. Groundbreaking on 232 acres took place on March 2, 1919. Construction and occupation of the base took place from 1919 through 1926. On December 1, 1921, Pendleton (now a General), placed it into commission as the Marine Advanced Expeditionary Base, San Diego. In 1923, the Marine Recruit Depot for the west coast relocated from Mare Island Navy Shipyards in Vallejo, Calif., to its new home at the San Diego Marine Base. On 1 March 1924, the base that had been developed as a result of the vision and efforts of General Pendleton became, officially, Marine Corps Base, San Diego, and would be known by that name for the next twenty-four years.
The base now consisted of approximately 388 acres, of which some 367 acres had been reclaimed tidal area. Throughout World War II, the principal activity of the base, recruit training overshadowed all other functions. After the war, the recruit training detachment remained the principal tenant. Marine Corps Base San Diego has been home to the 4th, 6th and 10th Marine Regiments, the Fleet Marine Force and the 2nd Marine Division. However, the main focus of the base has always been training and “the making of Marines.” On 1 January 1948, Marine Corps Base, San Diego was officially renamed Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. The Recruit Training Command grew from three to eight battalions to handle the troop requirements for the Korean War. More than 700 Quonset huts were erected to handle the influx of recruits, some of which are still standing today. The Vietnam War caused the next period of major expansion. A 100-tent cantonment had to be erected to handle the overflow of recruits. Five new recruit barracks, a new dining hall, new bowling alley, a new Regional Dental and Medical Clinic were constructed on the depot.
In the 1970’s the focus increased to include the recruiting effort and the Depot became Headquarters, Western Recruiting Region.
Today the Recruit Depot provides its nation’s Corps with basically trained Marines to fight in the current conflicts in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The depot has the responsibility to train all male recruits who reside west of the Mississippi River to serve at the call of the nation.
Known for its unique Spanish colonial revival style appearance, the overall site and specific building plans were developed by renowned architect, Bertram Goodhue, who also designed the buildings built in San Diego’s Balboa Park for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. Twenty-five of the Depot’s buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Thirteen buildings have been named for famous Marines, such a Daly Barracks, Pendleton Hall, McDougall Hall, and Day Hall.
Today, the depot has 388 acres and 25 buildings listed on the national register of historic places.

MCRDSD is located just northwest of downtown San Diego and north of the San Diego International Airport, Lindbergh Field. Gate 5 (Washington St.) is the main visitor gate.
Entering and Leaving the Depot
All visitor vehicles MUST enter through Gate 5 (Washington Street, exit off of highway 5 north or south). Vehicles and personnel are subject to search upon entry. Expect delay and plan accordingly. Speed limit throughout the base is 15-20 MPH. Please drive at 5 MPH when near marching troops and obey all traffic and speed signs.
Driver’s License/Registration/Insurance
If you are driving a vehicle, ensure you have a driver’s license, vehicle registration card, and proof of insurance in your possession. Each of these items are required to be current and in a valid status. If you are unsure, contact your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles/Motor Vehicle Administration and they will assist you in determining the status of your driver’s license and registration.
Firearms/Weapons
All firearms and weapons are prohibited aboard MCRDSD.
Drugs
All controlled substances are prohibited aboard MCRDSD. Any person(s) found possessing a controlled substance or associated paraphernalia (i.e. smoking devices) will be found in violation of Federal law. A medical marijuana card does not authorize possession of marijuana aboard MCRDSD. Contraband will be seized and offenders may be cited and denied entry.
REAL ID

Lance Cpl. “Bruno”
Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego is proud to share our mascot Bruno. Bruno was born in San Diego, California, October 22, 2022. He was promoted to private first class September 22, 2023. He was promoted to his current rank of lance corporal July 14, 2024. He is named after Maj. Gen. Bruno Hochmuth, who at the time of his death was the first General Officer killed during the Vietnam War. Major General Hochmuth was also the commanding general of the depot from November 1963 to February 1967.
General Hochmuth was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with Combat "V" (Valor), the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star in lieu of a second award, and the Purple Heart with Gold Star. Bruno's mascot duties will include participating in events such as family day, motivational runs and graduation ceremonies, in addition to various community relations and recruiting events throughout the Western Recruiting Region.
BULLDOG MASCOTS IN THE MARINE CORPS
The tenacious fighting of the Marines at Belleau Wood in during World War I earned them the sobriquet, “Teufel Hunden” or “Devil Dogs.” Teufel-Hunden were the vicious, wild, and ferocious mountain dogs of Bavarian folklore. It wasn't long before a recruiting poster painted by Charles B. Falls appeared showing a dachshund wearing a spiked helmet and Iron Cross. The dog was running from an English bulldog wearing a helmet with the globe and anchor insignia on it. Written on the poster was, "Teufelhunden - Devil Dog Recruiting Station." The poster was embraced by the Marine Corps and public, and the bulldog would soon become a much loved mascot of the Marine Corps.
The Marine Corps has Smedley Butler to thank for the adoption of the English bulldog as its mascot. Following the end of World War I, public interest in the military waned. In 1919 Brigadier General Smedley D. Butler, fondly known as “Old Gimlet Eye,” was appointed Commanding General of Marine Corps Barracks, Quantico, Virginia. General Butler understood the importance of top quality sporting events and of favorable publicity in attracting men to the Marine Corps. He became the driving force that put Marines in the public spotlight through the “Quantico Marines” football team, a venture that was to last half a century and garner widespread publicity and recognition, not only for Quantico but the entire Marine Corps. In 1921 General Butler purchased a pedigree English bulldog, named “King Bulwark” to become the official Quantico Mascot. This breed was known for its fierce stocky body and tenacious temperament.
King Bulwark was not considered to be an appropriate name for a Marine Mascot so his name was changed to “Jiggs” after a popular personality in the cartoon strip “Maggie and Jiggs.” He was enlisted in the Marine Corps on 7 October 1922 and issued a service record book, a custom already in effect for mascots in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. General Butler himself signed Jiggs’ enlistment papers and appointed him a sergeant major. Jiggs received worldwide recognition and appeared at all sporting events where Marines played and everywhere else that his presence might draw public attention and enhance the morale and spirit of Marines. Many Marine Corps athletic teams were called “Fighting Bulldogs.”
Sergeant Major. Jiggs' death, on 9 January 1927, was mourned throughout the Corps. His satin-lined coffin lay in state in a hangar at Quantico, surrounded by flowers from hundreds of admirers.
He was interred with full military honors. Former heavyweight boxing champion, James J. "Gene" Tunney, who had served with the Marines in France, donated his English bulldog, to become the next mascot. The dog, which was renamed Jiggs II, died in 1928. During the 1930s, 1940s, and early 1950s mascots were all named “Smedley”, a tribute to General Butler.
The “Chesty” dynasty took up residence at Marine Corps Barracks, Washington, D.C., on 5 July 1957. Chesty XVI became the current mascot in May 2022.

Travel plans may be coordinated to enable Marines to depart the Depot with their family following graduation and travel to their leave location together. Marines will travel with their follow-on orders which state the date that they are required to report to the School of Infantry to continue their Marine Corps training. 2. TAILGATING / RV PARKING
For guests to MCRD San Diego that intend to park a recreation vehicle or “tailgate” on family or graduation day, please refer to the following map and utilize the highlighted lot.
Conducting these activities surrounding the parade deck has become a safety hazard and guests will be asked to move their vehicles if they are found outside of the designated lot. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
3. WHAT IS THE TYPICAL GRADUATION WEEK SCHEDULE?

To request American Sign Language (ASL) services, please contact MCRDSD Protocol Office at 619-524-8707/8710. Requests should be made as soon as possible but at least 3-4 weeks prior to arrival for Family Day and Graduation Events.

4. DO I NEED A PARKING PASS FOR FAMILY DAY OR GRADUATION?
There is no special pass or parking pass for Family Day and Graduation. Visitors are advised to park in the parking lots adjacent to the parade deck and base theater. Visitors may park in any open space not marked or reserved for base purposes.
5. IS THERE A DRESS CODE FOR FAMILY DAY AND GRADUATION?
There is no specific dress code, but visitors are reminded not to wear clothing which could be considered offensive. Also, visitors should account for the weathered forecasted during the day. To show support for your new Marine, it has become customary to wear the color of his battalion.
The color for 1st Recruit Training Battalion (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta Companies) is red.
The color for 2nd Recruit Training Battalion (Echo, Fox, Golf and Hotel Companies) is yellow.
The color for 3rd Recruit Training Battalion (India, Kilo, Lima and Mike Companies) is blue.
6. MILITARY UNIFORMS TO GRADUATION
Yes, current and former service members are permitted to wear uniforms to graduation in accordance with the uniform regulations for their branch of service. Wear of any version of the camouflage utility/field uniform is not encouraged, while wear of uniforms comparable or more formal than the graduates is appropriate. In the summer months (during Daylight Saving Time), the graduation uniform is the Dress Blue D. In the winter months (non-Daylight Saving Time), the graduation uniform for the new Marines is Dress Blue B.
7. HOW DO RECRUITS MAKE RESERVATIONS FOR TRAVEL/TRANSPORTATION HOME?
The recruits are provided the opportunity to book travel on T-33. Currently, they are authorized time to call respective family members to determine if they will pay/book travel for the recruit or if the recruit should book the travel.
Marine Recruit are authorized to utilizing CPEN ITT Latitudes.
8. NEW MARINES LUGGAGE
Marines are issued two sea bags, one garment bag and one small duffle bag for their uniforms and gear. A sea bag measures approximately 32 inches tall and 15 inches in diameter.
The garment bag measures approximately 40 inches tall, 26 inches wide and 5 inches thick, but may be folded in half. Excess baggage fees will not be reimbursed to new Marines for their commercial travel home; however, some airlines may waive baggage fees for Marines who show their military orders and ID at check-in.
9. CAN I VISIT MY RECRUIT?
Families cannot visit their recruits during training. The first time families are able to see their new Marines is on Graduation and Family Day.
10. RECRUIT PHONE CALLS, E-MAIL OR INTERNET
Recruits are required to make one phone call on the night they arrive at MCRDSD to inform someone of their choice (typically a parent) they have arrived at training safely.
However, this call does not always go through and not receiving a call does not mean your recruit has not arrived. Other than that, recruits are not permitted to make phone calls, send e-mails or texts, or access the Internet. Recruits are not permitted to be in possession of cellphones or other electronic communication devices. All correspondence between a recruit and family/friends is made via letters/postcards sent via the USPS. In the event of an emergency, a recruit will be permitted to phone someone for awareness.
11. RECRUIT MAIL IN TRAINING?
Mailing address templates can be found at http://www.mcrdsd.marines.mil/Recruit-Training/Contacting-a-Recruit/, and your recruit will mail home in the first 2-3 weeks with his unit information.
You can also contact your recruit's recruiter if you do not know the platoon, company or battalion information. Please remember not to mail your recruit any prohibited items while they are in training.

14. WHY IS MY RECRUIT NOT GETTING MY MAIL?
During the first 2-3 weeks of recruit training, recruits will send home a letter stating they've made it to MCRDSD and will provide an address for which to receive mail. All mail is routed through the only mail office on MCRDSD and your mail will not reach your recruit without the correct company and platoon number.
The mail office will see that information and sort the mail to that company and platoon. The company and platoon information will be listed on the letter your recruit sends home approximately 2-3 weeks into training. If you don’t receive mail for a period of time, please call his recruiter to get his correct platoon number and company. Lost and Found - Lost an item? Call extension x4128, stop by Building #217 (Physical Security office), to see if your lost item has been turned in. Currently within our lost and found we have: Purchased MCX items forgotten at the register, driver licenses/identification cards, debit/credit cards, wallets, gift cards, recruit duffle bags, toys, hats, clothing items, prescription glasses/sunglasses, military uniform items, watches, electronic cords, jewelry, etc. When reclaiming lost property, we will need identification and be able to give a detailed description of the item or provide proof of ownership.

Visitors are not permitted to bring firearms on base, including off-duty civilian law enforcement personnel. For military members or other base personnel or residents, contact the Provost Marshal's Office (PMO) for more information on registering firearms and other regulations at 619-524-4202.
7. CIVILIANS MOTORCYCLE ON BASE
• Headlights must be on when in operation.
• A rear view mirror must be on each side’s handle bars.
• Eye protection must be shatter resistant goggles or a full face shield attached to the helmet. Eyeglasses are not enough protection.
• Sandals, open toe shoes, and tennis shoes are not permitted.
• Gloves must be full fingered.
8. RECRUIT SERIOUS EMERGENCY?
If a message is required to notify a recruit of an emergency situation at any time during recruit training, please contact your local America Red Cross or please visit the American Red Cross Emergency Communication Services webpage, to have an official message sent to MCRDSD. In order to process the message quickly, please provide the recruit's name, social security number, company and platoon.
The American Red Cross Hero Care Center is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. To Contact American Red Cross or to learn more about their services to military families, please contact http://www.redcross.org/emergencycommunication/ or 1-877-272-733.
9. WHO CAN SHOP AT THE MCRD SD EXCHANGE (MCX) ON MCRD SD?
MCX Logo and Memorabilia Store: Civilians may shop on Family Days and Graduations only.
MCX Marine Mart: Civilians may not purchase alcohol and tobacco products aboard MCRDSD.
MCX Main Store: You must be an authorized patron (active-duty, reservist, military retiree, or a military dependent with valid military-issued ID) in order to purchase within the Main Store.
10. CHAPELS ON MCRD SD
The services provided at the MCRDSD Chapel are for military personnel only, including those who live on base. The recruit services are strictly for recruits and their family members only.
11. WHAT IS THE POLICY FOR DOGS?
Dogs are allowed aboard MCRDSD under the following stipulations:
• Dogs must be kept on a leash not to exceed six feet in length.
• Animals, except Military Working Dogs in the performance of official duties, the MCRDSD mascot, and licensed service dogs, are not allowed in the dispensary, lodging, dining facilities, exchange activities, swimming pool, gymnasium, any area where food is prepared or stored, theaters, or office buildings.
• Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, canine/wolf hybrids, or any canine breed with dominant traits of aggression are prohibited aboard MCRDSD.
• When an animal is reported to PMO as a public nuisance, the report will be investigated, and if substantiated, the owner will be ordered to remove the animal from MCRDSD.

13. CAN I LEAVE MY CAR ON THE BASE?
Only personnel who are assigned to MCRDSD and their dependents, and Department of Defense civilian employees employed at MCRDSD, are authorized to park on the installation in excess of 72 hours.
Authorized personnel who wish to park their vehicle on the base in excess of 72 hours must meet the following criteria: be registered on base, a parking pass must be issued in person by PMO, the vehicle must be legally parked in a designated long-term parking area (gravel lot adjacent to PMO), and the parking pass must be visible for inspection on the front dashboard.
14. DO YOU OFFER TOURS OF THE BASE?
Unfortunately, due to the restrictions of COVID-19 the depot has not returned to normal operations. The depot has authorized family and friends to attend graduations, but the base is not open to the public for tours. At this time you are allowed to visit the depot during graduation weeks, but tours are not available
Groups visiting MCRDSD who wish an organized, escorted tour must submit a request at least 30 days prior to arriving. Group tours will be granted on a case-by-case basis and is contingent on factors such as manpower and time, as well as government regulations. Visits are typically limited to Mondays through Fridays.
Eligible groups include JROTC, ROTC, reunion groups, community organizations, veterans organizations, active duty military groups/units, etc. Groups of family and friends attending Family Day and Graduation should not submit a request. 16. REAL ID
Effective May 7, 2025, all guests and visitors 18 years and older accessing Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego should be prepared to present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or an approved alternate form of identification (i.e. - U.S. passport) to enter the base, in accordance with federal law, MCO 5530.13, and the Department of Homeland Security’s REAL ID Act.
Visitors without a REAL ID-compliant license or ID must bring:
A valid, unexpired state-issued photo ID, AND one of the following secondary forms of ID that matches the name on the primary ID:

MCRDSD does not keep personnel records of former recruits, drill instructors or other military personnel stationed here in the past, nor do we keep track their current whereabouts. Those searching for former service members are advised to search the internet for sites and organizations that may be of assistance.
For procedures on requesting archived military personnel records, visit the National Archives website at http://archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/. Please note, access to these records are typically only granted to the owners of the records or their family members.
