Sergeant Major Michael G. Olson
Sergeant Major, Recruit Training Regiment
Sergeant Major Olson enlisted in the Marine Corps on 13 October 1986 and attended Recruit Training at MCRD San Diego, California. Upon completion, he received training at Marine Corps Engineer School, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he attained the Military Occupational Specialty of 1171 Utilities Marine.
Upon completion of Engineer School, Sergeant Major Olson was assigned to 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st FSSG. Shortly after reporting he was transferred to the11th MEU, where he served with the Engineer Platoon. During this assignment he participated in numerous exercises and two western pacific deployments. During this assignment he was promoted to Lance Corporal and Corporal. In December of 1990 Sergeant Major Olson deployed with BSSG-5 in support of Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm until his return in September of 1991.
In December 1992, having been reassigned to 7th ESB, 1st FSSG, Sergeant Major Olson deployed to Somalia as a member of 1st FSSG Forward in support of Operation Restore Hope.
In August 1993, he was transferred to MCLB, Albany, Georgia and assigned to Facilities Maintenance Division serving as an Emergency Maintenance Crew Leader. During this tour of duty he was promoted to Sergeant and requested orders to drill instructor duty.
In September of 1995, Sergeant Major Olson reported to Drill Instructor School, MCRD, San Diego. Upon graduation he served in Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor.
Sergeant Major Olson reported to Marine Wing Support Squadron-373 in February 1998, where he held the billet of Maintenance SNCOIC and Section Chief. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in December of 1998.
In July of 2001, Sergeant Major Olson received orders to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan where he served as the Utilities Chief for Engineer Company, MWSS-171. In July 2002 he was selected for promotion to Gunnery Sergeant.
Upon completion of his overseas tour, Sergeant Major Olson was assigned to the 11th Marines, Camp Pendleton as the Regimental Engineer Chief. During this assignment he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was selected to First Sergeant in December of 2005.
In April of 2006, Sergeant Major Olson received orders to MCRD, San Diego and was assigned as the First Sergeant for Company A and Receiving Company.
In November of 2008 Sergeant Major Olson received orders to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines and deployed to Helmand Province Afghanistan as the Headquarters and Service Company First Sergeant and was selected for promotion in October of 2009.
Upon promotion to his current rank he executed orders to Sacramento, CA where he served as the Recruiting Station Sergeant Major until June of 2013.
From June 2013 to February 2014 Sergeant Major Olson served as the Squadron Sergeant Major of Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron-3, MCAS Miramar, CA
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with four gold stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Sergeant Major Olson has been married to the former Cuy Pena of Michoacan, Mexico for more than 23 years. They have two children: Xochitl Alannah and Xul Michelle.
