A recruit of Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, blocks a strike from his opponent during a pugil sticks bout at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, April 23. During each bout recruits are expected to apply the techniques they were just taught. A fighter will become victorious if he is able to deliver a strike to his opponent’s head or force him off of the bridge. Before the battles began, recruits double checked their protective gear because once in the arena, they used full force. Helmets, groin protector, flak jackets, gloves and mouthpieces were given to each recruit. Today, all male recruits recruited from recruiting stations west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Lima Company is scheduled to graduate from recruit training on June 19.
