Col Jones was born in Selma and grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana and Georgia State University. In the summer of 1993, he attended the Officer Candidate’s School, Platoon Leaders Course, Quantico, VA and on 25 June 1994 he was commissioned a Marine Officer.
In 1995, while attending the Basic Officers School, Quantico, 2nd Lt Jones was selected as Infantry Officer. His first tour was with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division Camp Lejeune, NC. He deployed with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, participating in actions supporting Operation Decisive Endeavor. During this tour he held the billets of Rifle Platoon Commander, Executive Officer, and Company Commander, Golf Company. 1stLt Jones’ final assignment was as the Assistant Operations Officer for the 8th Marine Regiment.
In the summer of 1998 Capt Jones transferred to the Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA. During this tour with 3rd Battalion, he held the billets of Series Commander and Executive Officer, Kilo Company and was subsequently selected as Lima Company Commander.
From 2001 to 2002 Capt Jones attended the USMC Amphibious Warfare School. Upon graduation Capt Jones instructed offensive/defensive tactics at the Officer Candidate’s School before being assigned to Marine Barracks 8th & I. In this tour Capt Jones held the billet of Deputy Director, Distance Learning and Technology, Marine Corps Institute Company, marched as a Flanking Officer on the Evening Parade Staff, and concluded this post as Company Commander, Marine Security Company, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD.
In 2004 newly promoted Maj Jones returned to the 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC as an Assistant Operations Officer, G-3 Operations and deployed to Ramadi, Iraq. In support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Maj Jones was the Ground Operations Watch until his assignment to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines as the Executive Officer during combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq. Upon redeployment Major Jones was re-assigned as the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines Military Transition Team Leader. From 2006 to 2007 he served as Advisor to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 7th Iraqi Infantry Division and led his team during combat actions in Ramadi, Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
From 2007 to 2008 Maj Jones attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College earning a Master’s in Military Studies. Upon graduation he was selected for joint assignment with the Defense Intelligence Agency, Pentagon, as an Executive Liaison Agent for the Secretary of Defense and Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 2009, mid tour, Maj Jones graduated the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk, VA.
Promoted on 1 Sep 2010, LtCol Jones successfully completed his joint tour in May 2011 and assumed command of 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island in Jul 2011. Post successful battalion command in the summer 2013, Lieutenant Colonel Jones was selected as the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Fellow to the Bureau of Diplomatic Security Service, US Department of State/Student - USMC Top Level School Fellowship Program.
From 2014 to 2015 LtCol Jones deployed as the Future Operations Officer, 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Bahrain. During this period he was lead planner for MARCENT support of Operation Inherent Resolve and Plans Officer, Joint Combined Planning Cell, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in support of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Coalition Operation AL HAZZEM (Decisive Storm).
From Sep 2015 to Feb 2016 LtCol Jones served as the Head, Homeland Defense Branch, Plans, Policies & Operations, Headquarters Marine Corps. Then in March of 2016 LtCol Jones was selected as the Director of the US House of Representatives US Marine Corps Liaison Office. After successful completion of the 114th Congressional cycle, and promotion, Col Jones was selected in March of 2017 as the Military Assistant and Aide to the Under Secretary of the Navy.
On 1 June 2018 Col Jones was assigned as the Commander, 215th Afghan Army Corps Advisor Team, Task-Force Southwest 19.1. Deploying in Oct of 2018 to June of 2019 he effectively led his team during combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and NATO Mission Resolute Support. Upon redeployment he was assigned as the II Marine Expeditionary Force G-35 (Future Operations Officer).
In July of 2020 he was assigned as the Chief of Staff, Naval Amphibious Force, Task Force 51, 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade.
His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device and Gold Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
