Lieutenant Colonel Jesse Sjoberg 2nd Recruit Training Battalion

Lieutenant Colonel Sjoberg is a native of Omaha, Neb., and graduated from Bellevue University. He was commissioned in August 1998 through the Officer Candidate Course and graduated from The Basic School as the honor graduate in academics, leadership, military skills and overall. He attended the Financial Management Officers Course where he was also the honor graduate.

In 2000, Lt.Col. Sjoberg, who taught martial arts as a civilian, was assigned to help establish the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program as the program’s deputy director. After the program’s successful introduction, he served at The Basic School as the fiscal officer, senior martial arts instructor and instructor for newly commissioned lieutenants. He then reported to the 3d Marine Aircraft Wing to be the budget officer and then as the deputy assistant chief of staff, comptroller. He deployed to Iraq in 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II.

Subsequently assigned to the Special Education Program, he earned a master’s degree in Leadership Education and Development at the University of Maryland and was the class valedictorian and recipient of the Major Richard J. Gannon II, USMC Award for outstanding leadership. He then served at the United States Naval Academy as the company officer of 20th Company, which earned an unprecedented three consecutive Color Company titles as the top company within the brigade of midshipmen.

Lieutenant Col. Sjoberg next attended the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College where he earned the Gen. George C. Marshall award as the distinguished graduate, as well as the Iron Major award for superior physical performance. He then reported to 3D MAW to serve as the deputy comptroller. He deployed as the AC/S Comptroller for Marine Corps Central Command (Forward), and redeployed to serve as the AC/S comptroller for 3d MAW from May of 2013 until his transfer to the joint staff in July of 2014.

Lieutenant Col. Sjoberg's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (third award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (third award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (second award), and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
