Colonel Von Bergen was commissioned in 1996 and after completion of The Basic School and Field Artillery Basic Officer’s Course he was assigned to 3d Battalion, 11th Marines.

Colonel Von Bergen’s operational assignments include: Guns Platoon Commander, Forward Observer and Fire Direction Officer at 3d Battalion, 11th Marines, where he deployed in support of the Unit Deployment Program; Fire Support Coordinator, 1st Tank Battalion; Battery Commander, Battery S, deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer, 5th Battalion, 11th Marines; Brigade Platoon Commander, 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, deploying twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; Fire Support Officer, United States Special Operations Command; Fires and Effects Officer, I Marine Expeditionary Force (FWD) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; Commanding Officer, 3d Battalion, 11th Marines; Fires and Effects Coordinator, I Marine Expeditionary Force; Commanding Officer, 14th Marine Regiment.

Colonel Von Bergen’s supporting establishment assignments include: Platoon Commander, Executive Officer, Assistant Logistics Officer and Assistant Operations Officer, Officer Candidates School; Program Analysis and Evaluation Division, OPNAV 80 and MAGTF Integration Branch, Headquarters Marine Corps, Program and Resources; Command Inspector General, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and Western Recruiting Region. 

Colonel Von Bergen attended the Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course, Naval War College Command and Staff, and studied as a National Security Fellow at the JFK School of Government, Harvard University.
