During rifle qualification, recruits fired the M16-A4 service rifle from the 200, 300 and 500-yard lines utilizing four different shooting positions: standing, kneeling, sitting and prone. Today, all males recruited from west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually.
