“My job is taking care of the people who use our facilities,” said Lorie Raschick, Boathouse recreation aid.  “I’ve been doing it for six years now, and it’s a job I love.”

Raschick, a Sioux Falls, S.D. native, moved to San Diego in 1970. She has done other jobs since her arrival. “I’ve done things like being a reservation clerk for Cloud Nine Airport Shuttle and an office worker for the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. But I’ve done nothing I’ve enjoyed as much as working here at the Boathouse, and taking care of the men and women in uniform who take care of us.”

Raschick is the only woman on the Boathouse staff. “I take care of making reservations for the picnic cabanas and renting out our aquatic recreational equipment.

“The Boathouse has a pretty good size fleet,” she said. “There are 15 motorboats, six 14 x 2 Capri sailboats, four Hobie catamaran sailboats, three Lazer sailboats, two 22-foot Capri sailboats, 26 single kaykas, eight double kaykas, five canoes and four paddle boats.

“We also rent surf boards, boogie boards, wet suits, snorkeling gear, fishing gear, standup paddle boards and life jackets,” she said.

            “And we sell bait too.”

Raschick has three children; a son in the Navy, a daughter in Alabama and a second daughter here. “I also have six grand kids and one more on the way.

“One thing I especially like about the Boathouse is the fact that we have more than a hundred potted plants around the facilities,” said Raschick. “I like to make sure they are cared for and watered. They just brighten up the place.”

Boathouse hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. “We also work on holidays,” said Raschick.
