A recruit assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California was pronounced dead on August 5, 2026 at Tri-City Medical Center, Oceanside, CA, following a medical emergency during a routine physical fitness evaluation aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA on August 1, 2026.

The matter is currently under investigation, and officials are conducting a medical review, both in accordance with standard procedure.

The identity of the recruit will not be released until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
