Recruits learn to tread water in the deep end of the pool Sept. 11 aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. They are required to tread water for a total of four minutes while wearing a full uniform and combat boots. Treading water allows a swimmer to keep their head above water while staying in one area.
