Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California - Sergeant Major Downing is a native of Columbia City, Indiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of eighteen, and attended Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in 1990. Following Marine Combat Training he obtained the MOS of 1833, Amphibious Assault Vehicle Crewman. He also completed two Unit Deployment Programs (UDP) with the 31st MEU in 1993 and 1995. In January of 2005, Gunnery Sergeant Downing was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and was transferred to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division and deployed with the 15th MEU. During this deployment, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines supported OPERATION STEEL CURTAIN in Iraq. Upon his return from deployment, First Sergeant Downing was transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah where he served as the Inspector Instructor First Sergeant and Company First Sergeant for Fox Company (-), 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines. Once complete with I & I duties, he reported to 8th Engineer Support Battalion aboard Camp Lejeune, NC where he was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major in 2009. Following his duties in North Carolina, Sergeant Major Downing reported to VMFAT-101 aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and served as the unit’s Sergeant Major from August 2014 to February 2016. Sergeant Major Downing stood the post as the Combat Logistics Regiment 15 Sergeant Major from February 2016 to February 2018. On 30 March 2018 Sergeant Major Downing assumed the duties as the Headquarters and Service Battalion Sergeant at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. Sergeant Major Downing’s personal awards include: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star in lieu of third award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V and two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Combat Action Ribbon with gold star in lieu of second award, and several service and campaign awards.
