Sergeant Lewis A. Velasquez, drill instructor, Receiving Company, Support Battalion, instructs a recruit to respond louder during receiving at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Feb. 1. Recruits must respond to everything a drill instructor says to develop instant obedience to orders. During the recruits’ first hours of recruit training, they will get haircuts, receive their initial gear issue and be searched for any contraband. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate April 29.
