Private Chris M. Gitau, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, climbs a wall while avoiding red marked areas during the Crucible 12 Stalls event at Edson Range, Camp Pendleton, Calif., Sept. 2. Each stall consisted of a specific task the squads needed to accomplish. If a recruit or the object he was moving touched the red area, which was considered an Improvised Explosive Device trigger, he was required to run with two 30-pound ammunition cans for approximately 50 yards. Gitau a Nairobi, Kenya, native, moved to America at the age of 21 and was inspired by his cousin to join the Marine Corps. Today, all males recruited from west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Golf Company graduated Sept. 11.
