Private First Class Jonathan A. Uitvlugt, Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Platoon 3226, helps his fire team carry a simulated casualty from a combat zone during the Crucible at Edson Range, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., May 20. The Crucible is a 54-hour test of endurance where recruits must conquer more than 30 different obstacles while they experience food and sleep deprivation. During the Crucible, recruits utilize small unit leadership skills they’ve acquired throughout training. Uitvlugt is a 21-year-old Grand Rapids, Mich., native and was recruited from Recruit Station Lansing. Today, all males recruited from west of the Mississippi are trained at MCRD San Diego. The depot is responsible for training more than 16,000 recruits annually. Company K is scheduled to graduate from recruit training on May 29.
