A recruit of Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, begins his descent from the "hell hole" during the fast roping exercise in recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Aug. 29. The platform opens to a 60-foot drop, which simulates the opening Marines would use in the back of an aircraft to conduct an insertion when landing the aircraft is not possible.
