Lieutenant Colonel Joel M. Hoffman

Commanding Officer, Support Battalion

LtCol Hoffman is a native of Indiana.  He graduated from Indiana University in May of 1993 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Affairs.  He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1994 and attended Boot Camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California.

LtCol Hoffman reported to Communication Company, 4th Marine Division as a Comm Center Operator in July 1994.  In June 1995, he attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) and was commissioned a second lieutenant upon completion of OCS.  He then reported to The Basic School (TBS) and continued on to the Adjutant’s Course in Camp Johnson, North Carolina.  In April 1996, he reported for duty with 1st Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment as the Infantry Battalion S-1.  He later deployed with Battalion Landing Team 1/2, 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) and participated in Operation SILVER WAKE in Albania.  In December 1999, he reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island serving as a Series Commander, Company Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of Fox Company, 2d Recruit Training Battalion.  In March 2001, he reported for duty with 8th Marine Regiment as the Infantry Regiment S-1.  After the September 11th terrorist attacks, the Marine Corps used the 8th Marine Regiment to serve as the nucleus for the activation of the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Anti-Terrorism) (4th MEB(AT)).  From October 2001 to August 2003, he would serve as the Deputy G-1 and Adjutant for the 4th MEB (AT).  In August 2003, he attended the Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) in Quantico, Virginia.  Following EWS, he reported to Officer Candidate School to serve as a Platoon Commander with 2nd Platoon, India Company.  In July 2004, he reported to Programs and Resources (P&R) Department, Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC) to serve as the Administration Officer and Security Manager.  He then served in an Individual Augment (IA) billet and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  He served with the Multi-National Corps Iraq (MNC-I) as a Frago Writer in the Current Operations Section of the C-3.  Upon returning to the Pentagon, he finished his tour with P&R Department.  In July 2006, he reported to the Naval Postgraduate School and graduated with a Masters of Science in Management in April 2008.  In May 2008, he reported to Total Force Structure Division as the Deputy Operations Officer.  During this tour, he served as the Staff Secretary for the 2010 Force Structure Review Group (FSRG).  In July 2011, he reported to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing as the Deputy G-1 and AC/S G-1.     

LtCol Hoffman’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

LtCol Hoffman is married to the former Sarah Margaret Sease of Beaufort, South Carolina.  They have two children: Thomas Mastin 11 and Riley Caroline 10.
