Marine Band San Diego Ensembles
The fifty Marines of Marine Band San Diego perform in a variety of ensembles, ranging from a full concert band to a brass quintet.
The Concert Band, consisting of some fifty Marines, is the largest performing ensemble within Marine Band San Diego. Performing in large indoor and outdoor venues, its repertoire consists of military marches, orchestral transcriptions, and works composed specifically for wind ensemble. Concert Band performances often feature solo instrumentalists with band accompaniment or performances by one or more of the Marine Band San Diego Small Ensembles such as the Jazz Combo or the Party Band. Marine Band San Diego‟s annual concerts are highlighted by its winter and summer concert series aboard the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, and throughout the Southern California area for audiences as large as 20,000 people.
| Ceremonial Band
Comprised of 30-40 Marines, the Ceremonial Band performs for military and civilian ceremonies, parades, and small concert settings. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music to include such world renowned composers as Alford, Fillmore, Goldman, and of course the ?March King? himself, John Phillip Sousa. As Marine Band San Diego‟s most active ensemble, they can be seen annually at the Tournament of Roses Parade, Northern California Scottish Highland Games, and local San Diego Chargers' and Padres' home game.
| Brass Quintet
The Brass Quintet adds the perfect touch of class to any event. Its versatility and professionalism enables it to perform in many venues, including schools, banquets, military ceremonies, and formal concerts. The Brass Quintet has an extensive repertoire, including standard classical literature, dixieland favorites, and even pop hits from the '80s.
| Woodwind Quintet
The Woodwind Quintet can be called upon to play for community recitals, military ceremonies, educational outreach concerts, and just about anything else that the situation demands. This versatile ensemble can play selections from Irving Berlin to John Phillip Sousa, and adds elegance to any Marine Band performance.
| Jazz Combo
The Jazz Combo performs a wide variety of jazz charts at receptions, military ceremonies, and schools throughout the country. The members of the combo play music from all eras of recorded Jazz ranging from Real Book standards and original compositions, to contemporary jazz.
| Contemporary Music Ensemble
The Contemporary Music Ensemble is a fresh take on the traditional military band setting with a wide range of rock tunes spanning from Classic Rock bands like Led Zepplin to recent pop sensation, Chris Daughtry. This highly entertaining rock group has performed for educational outreach concerts around the country, and will continue to seize opportunities for community entertainment in the future.
| Party Band
The Party Band offers a diverse array of musical selections ranging from jazz, dixieland, pop, blues, and authentic "New Orleans brass band," making it one of Marine Band San Diego‟s most flexible and adaptable small ensembles.
The Brass Choir consists of Trumpets, French Horns, Euphoniums, Trombones, Tubas, and a minute percussion section. Despite being the newest addition to Marine Band San Diego they incorporate a wide range of repertoire ranging from the Baroque era to contemporary music.
| Percussion Ensemble
The Percussion Ensemble is made up of nine Marines who play a wide variety of percussion instruments. The ensemble often takes well-known melodies and performs them on marimbas, bells, xylophone, snare drum, timpani, and the bass drum. Also performing such genres as latin jazz, baroque, and pop literature, this group is truly a delight to watch.
| Saxophone Quartet
Consisting of four talented musicians, the Saxophone Quartet provides a different twist to the Marine Corps Music Program. The different ranges of the various instruments in the Saxophone family allow for a large array of genres. Performing primarily for military functions such as receptions, educational clinics, holiday events, and much more the Saxophone Quartet covers a wide variety of music.
| Jazz Ensemble
Continuing the history of the military big bands of the past, the Jazz Ensemble is an 18 piece band that plays a diverse repertoire which includes music from the swing era of WWII to the hip jazz standard arrangements of today.
