Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California - San Diego – Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego was presented with the 2018 Federal Utility Partnership Award on March 7, 2019, during a recent San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) Federal Energy Forum. Receiving the award for MCRD San Diego was Rick Hatcher, the Installation Energy Manager. The following points were highlighted regarding MCRD’s award presentation: • MCRD has partnered with SDG&E on multiple Utility Energy Service Contract (UESC) projects beginning in 2009. • MCRD installed 3.6 megawatts (MW) of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems providing more than 30% of the base's energy load. • The most recent UESC project replaced more than 26,000 lights with high efficiency lighting resulting in a savings of 554 kilowatt hours (kWh). • MCRD has installed 160,000 square feet of synthetic turf, significantly decreasing the water requirement aboard the installation. • More than 90% of the non-tactical vehicle fleet are electric vehicles, hybrids, or fueled by E85, an ethanol fuel blend of 85% ethanol fuel and 15% gasoline. • The bus carrying Marines to the airport is powered by Compressed Natural Gas. • MCRD has reduced their millions of British Thermal Units (MBTU) by 41% (against a 2015 baseline) utilizing a transition from steam to gas. Criteria considered in selecting the awardee included: energy conservation and efficiency efforts, either over a prolonged period or significant activity in the previous year; engagement with SDG&E to assist in achieving energy conservation; demonstrated expertise in energy management; impact to the region from an energy management and sustainability perspective; demonstrated strong qualities of environmental stewardship; and the embracing of new energy technologies such as renewable generation, energy storage and electric vehicle infrastructure.
