Sergeant Major Getty enlisted in the Marine Corps on January 10, 1989, and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.  In July 1989, after completing Marine Combat Training in Camp Geiger, N.C., and Basic Supply Administration Course in Camp Johnson, N.C, he was meritoriously promoted to private first class.  He then transferred to Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Twentynine Palms, Calif., for duty as a supply clerk with Direct Support Stock Control (DSSC).  He was meritoriously promoted to corporal in June 1992.

In August of that year, Cpl. Getty transferred to Marine Aircraft Group-49, Detachment “C”, 4th Marine Air Wing, South Weymouth, Mass.  He served as a supply administration clerk and was promoted to sergeant.

In March 1995, Sgt. Getty reported to Combat Service Support Detachment-36, 3rd Force Service Support Group, Iwakuni, Japan, where he participated in Forest Light 97-1 and was promoted to staff sergeant.  While there, he deployed to Darwin, Australia in support of United States Support Group East Timor.

In July 2001, SSgt. Getty transferred to Military Police Company, 4th Marine Division, Twin Cities, Minn., as the Inspector-Instructor Supply Chief.  He participated in numerous exercises at Camp Ripley, Minn., and Fort McCoy, Wis. He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 02.1, and he was promoted to gunnery sergeant during that deployment.

In April 2005, he transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.,  where he served as a drill Instructor, senior drill instructor, and series gunnery sergeant with Lima Company.  He was then selected to the rank of first sergeant and was reassigned to Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion.   

In May 2008, 1st Sgt. Getty transferred to Tango Battery, 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, N.C., for duty as the battery first sergeant, where he deployed to Iraq for the second time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 08.2. 

In November 2009, he transferred to Echo Battery, 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, for duty as the battery first sergeant.  In September 2010, Echo Battery was re-designated as Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, where he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 10.2.   

In August 2011, 1st Sgt. Getty transferred to Headquarters Company, Marine Special Operations Support Group, U. S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command where he served as the company first sergeant.

In May 2013, Sgt.Maj.  Getty transferred to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, Twentynine Palms, California for duty as the Battalion Sergeant Major, where he deployed to Afghanistan for the second time in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 14.2.

In January 2015, Sergeant Major Getty transferred to Marine Wing Support Squadron-374, Twentynine Palms, where he served as the squadron sergeant major.

In June 2016, he assumed the post as regimental sergeant major for Recruit Training Regiment, MCRD San Diego.

His personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, and the Combat Action Ribbon with one gold star in lieu of second award.
