Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California - Sergeant Major Zapata enlisted in the Marine Corps on 2 July 1990 in San Antonio, Texas. Upon graduation of Marine Corps Recruit Training, San Diego CA, and Marine Combat Training, and Infantry Training Battalion, Camp Pendleton CA. PFC Zapata reported to 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines. From December of 1990 to July of 1994, PFC. Zapata served with 3rd Battalion 9th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton CA, as a Mortar man and Scout Sniper. During his tour, he deployed to Operations Desert Storm and Restore Hope and two deployments to Okinawa. In July of 1994, Cpl Zapata received orders to Edson Range, Camp Pendleton for duty as Coach, Block NCO and PMI. In March of 2016, he was transferred to 7th Marine Regiment for duty as Regimental Sergeant Major. Sergeant Major Zapata’s personal awards include The Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 Gold Stars), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (1 Gold Star), Combat Action Ribbon (1 Gold Star).
