Gunnery Sergeant Joel Angulo

Gunnery Sergeant Angulo was born on June 28, 1977 in Los Angeles, California, and enlisted in the Marine Corps on October 28, 2001.  He attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, California, and upon graduation, attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, California.  Upon completion of MCT, Staff Sergeant Angulo attended Motor Transportation School at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he received the MOS 3531 Motor Transport Operator.


 In May 2002, Gunnery Sergeant Angulo reported to 4th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division, Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.  In June of 2002 Gunnery Sergeant Angulo deployed in support of Operation Cooperation by the Sea as a Motor Transport Representative.  He attended Marine Corps Integrated Maintenance Management Services School in June 2002 in Okinawa, Japan, and was then appointed as the Regimental MIMMS Clerk.


In July 2003, Gunnery Sergeant Angulo was promoted to Corporal and reported to 1st Tank Battalion in Twentynine Palms, California, as a Motor Transport Medium Section Line NCO. In October 2003 Gunnery Sergeant Angulo deployed as an Individual Augment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).  He served as a Convoy Security Escort for the 2nd Field Service Support Group under a SPMAGTF operating in Kuwait where he led multiple convoys and provided security to civilian contracted vehicles.


Upon return to Twentynine Palms, Gunnery Sergeant Angulo deployed to Iraq in support of OIF February 2004 with Charlie Company, 1st Tank Battalion, as the Motor Transport Operations Chief.  While serving in that capacity, his scope of responsibility was quite broad. Missions ranged from providing MSR Security and escorting Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams to spotting Artillery effects on target. In February 2005 he was promoted to Sergeant and served as both a Platoon Sergeant and Motor Transport Operations Chief for Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Tank Battalion.


In January 2006, he reported to Drill Instructor School at MCRD, San Diego, California.  While there, he served as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor with India Company, 3d Recruit Training Battalion and as a Curriculum Developer for Recruit Training Regiment.  His efforts aided in the restructuring of the Recruit Training and Drill Instructor School Programs of Instruction, and he was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in July 2008.


 In March 2009, Gunnery Sergeant Angulo reported to MWSS 371 in Yuma, Arizona as a Truck Master, Motor Transport Operations Chief, and Equal Opportunity Representative. In July 2009 he attended Motor Transport Advance Course at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  From August to October 2009, he was assigned to Weapons and Tactics Instruction in Yuma, Arizona as the Road Master, and in October 2010 he attended Career Course at Camp Pendleton, California.  In July 2011 Gunnery Sergeant Angulo attended the Electronic Key Management Systems (EKMS) Course at Camp Pendleton, California and was assigned as the EKMS Manager for the duration of his time with MWSS 371.  In October 2011, he was appointed as both the MWSS 371 Motor Transport Company 1stSgt and as a Motor Transport Maintenance Chief.


In April 2012 Gunnery Sergeant Angulo reported to 3d Battalion, 3d Marines in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, where he served as the Motor Transport Operations Chief.  During this time, he has served in the capacity of Motor Transport Officer and Maintenance Chief in addition to his primary billet as Motor Transport Operations Chief. In June 2013 he deployed under the Unit Deployment Program to Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan.


In April 2014 Gunnery Sergeant Angulo reported to Drill Instructor School at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego California and was subsequently assigned as a Senior Drill Instructor with Golf Company, Second Recruit Training Battalion. 


In September 2014 he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and assigned to his current billet as an instructor at Drill Instructor School.


His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with 3 bronze stars in lieu of 4th award, and the Marine Corps Drill Instructor Ribbon.
